Three decades in pest control, two of them building this company

Most pest control operators in Karachi learn the trade on the job. Rehan studied it first. He completed a B.Sc. in Environmental Science and an M.Sc. in Entomology, the scientific study of insects, and has worked in pest control for three decades. In 2005 he founded Accurate Fumigation, and he has run it ever since.

That background shapes how the company works. A technician who has only ever sprayed knows what worked last time. Someone trained in entomology understands why a species nests where it does, how its life cycle sets the right timing for a treatment, and why a general spray often misses the breeding site.

Under his leadership the company has handled everything from termite proofing in DHA's older bungalows to fumigation contracts for restaurants and warehouses in Korangi.

What entomology changes on a job

Knowing the insect decides the treatment. These are four places where that shows.

The species is identified first

German cockroaches live inside kitchens, in hinges and behind appliances. American cockroaches come up from drains. The first is treated with gel bait where it hides, and the second with a residual spray at drain entries. One spray for both does neither job well.

The treatment follows the life cycle

Killing the adults is the easy part. Bed bug eggs are harder to kill than the insects themselves, so a treatment has to reach every stage, in mattress seams, bed frames and wall cavities.

Termites are treated where they live

Subterranean termites nest in the soil and travel up into the woodwork. Spraying the damaged wood treats the symptom. A barrier in the soil treats the colony, which is why ground-floor termite work carries a 5-year warranty.

Products are rotated to manage resistance

Insects that survive one class of insecticide pass that resistance on. The company keeps more than one class of product for this reason. The details are on the chemicals page, which Rehan reviews.

What Rehan does at Accurate Fumigation

  • Runs the company: as he has since founding it in 2005.
  • Writes the blog: the pest guides on this site are his.
  • Reviews safety content: pages that give safety advice carry his name and the date he last reviewed them, as set out in the editorial policy.
