Water in Karachi rarely travels a clean, simple path from source to tap. It moves through an ageing KWSC pipe network, sometimes through private tankers, into rooftop or underground storage tanks, and finally into your kitchen. Bacteria
Stagnant, contaminated water is a known environment for bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Vibrio species — the organisms behind typhoid, bacterial diarrhoea, and cholera. These bacteria typically enter a tank through contaminated inlet water, cracks or gaps that let in dust and debris, or an improperly sealed lid that allows insects, birds, or rodents access.
Karachi’s tanker-dependent water supply adds another layer of risk. Algae
Algae needs light, warmth, and standing water to grow — conditions an exposed rooftop tank provides for most of the year in Karachi. Biofilm and sediment
Biofilm is the slimy layer that forms on tank walls and the underside of lids when bacteria colonise a surface and build a protective layer around themselves. Sediment — dust, rust flakes, and mineral deposits — settles at the tank floor and gets disturbed and pulled into the supply line whenever water levels drop low, which is common during Karachi’s frequent supply gaps.

Gastrointestinal illness
The most common and immediate risk from contaminated tank water is gastrointestinal illness — diarrhoea, vomiting, cramping, and in more serious bacterial infections, prolonged fever. Diarrhoeal illness linked to contaminated water disproportionately affects young children and elderly household members, and repeated exposure in a household with a persistently dirty tank can mean recurring “stomach bugs” that never seem to fully go away.
Typhoid fever
Typhoid, caused by Salmonella Typhi, is spread through contaminated water and food and is a genuine ongoing public health concern in Pakistan. Naegleria and Karachi’s specific risk profile
Karachi has, in recent years, dealt with cases linked to Naegleria fowleri — a microorganism that can enter the body through the nasal passage during activities like ablution or bathing with contaminated, unchlorinated water, and that has been associated in public health reporting with unregulated tanker-supplied water in the city. This is a serious, and rare but potentially fatal, risk specifically tied to unchlorinated or poorly treated water — one more reason not to assume tap or tank water is automatically safe simply because it looks clear.
Who’s Most at Risk
Contaminated water doesn’t affect everyone in a household equally. A few groups warrant extra caution:
- Young children, whose immune systems are less developed and who are more vulnerable to dehydration from diarrhoeal illness
- Elderly household members, who may take longer to recover from bacterial infections and are at higher risk of complications
- Anyone with an existing immune condition, for whom even relatively mild bacterial exposure can pose a bigger risk
